I Job Summary:
Provide Patient care and transportation of the sick and injured as directed by state law, statewide protocols, regional policy and procedures, and the Standard Operating Guidelines set forth by Highland Ambulance EMS, Inc.

C Interrelationships: Acts as a representative of Highland Ambulance EMS, Inc. to all persons contacted to include but not limited to patients and families, general public, physicians, hospital and nursing care facility staff and other EMS and Non-EMS organizations.
D Background verification: Successfully pass CORI (Criminal Offense Records Inquiry)

Emergency Medical Technician – Basic level is delegated the authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out assigned duties.
1. Supports and up-holds the mission, goals and objectives of Highland Ambulance EMS, Inc. at all times.
2. Provide basic life support care that includes all BLS skills on patients in the pre hospital setting as required by state law, statewide protocols, regional policy and procedures and the Standard Operating Guidelines set forth by Highland Ambulance EMS, Inc.
3. Interacts with other EMS, Fire Police, and other Emergency services as required to promote patient care, training and transportation.
4. Respond promptly to Highland Ambulance EMS, Inc., Emergency dispatch, adhering to Highland Ambulance EMS, Inc.’s Dispatch and Response Time Guidelines at all times.
5. Responsible for insuring that all documentation is accurately and legibly completed in accordance with Highland Ambulance EMS, Inc.’s Guidelines for Patient Care Report Completion by the end of the assigned shift. This is to include all patient insurance information and, vehicle inspection / maintenance reports.
6. Must perform all shift requirements of Highland Ambulance EMS, Inc. as outlined in the Standard Operating Guidelines.
7. Shall provide the transportation of clients and patients by means of ambulance when assigned.
8. Must be able to perform minor vehicle maintenance (fuel, fluids, air, wash vehicles etc.) on all vehicles as required.
9. Daily, or at the beginning of each shift, perform a complete inventory of each ambulance, including cleaning of the interior and washing the exterior.
Additional specific job related activities that assist the Emergency Medical Technician – Basic level in performing the above essential functions are detailed in the Highland Ambulance EMS, Inc.’s Standard Operating Guidelines.
IV Assessment, Knowledge, Ability, Attitude and Skills:
1. Ability to operate all vehicles in a safe and efficient manner. Demonstrate geographic knowledge of the service area and street locations.
2. The Emergency Medical Technician – Basic must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to all patients: neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric according to the pre-established BLS treatment protocols. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements as to his/her age specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the appropriate protocols.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of and adhere to the proper procedures to follow in the event of a blood spill and the proper use and location of protective equipment.
4. The Emergency Medical Technician – Basic must be able to communicate appropriate information to the Medical Control Physician or Emergency Department staff in a timely manner. They must also be able to accurately implement physician’s orders according to Highland Ambulance EMS, Inc. and regional protocols.
5. Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
6. Consistently demonstrate the ability to assess a situation, consider several alternatives and choose the most appropriate course of action.
7. Ability to perform strenuous duties under adverse conditions.
8. Must be positive, diligent and work cooperatively with colleagues and management. Must be punctual and perform all aspects of job responsibilities with honesty and integrity.

3. Due to the nature of the job requirements, Highland Ambulance EMS, Inc. may require employees to report to work early, stay late, or work holidays and weekends. Some overtime may be required.

Physical Requirements
Moderate to heavy physical effort is required to assist subordinates and partners whenever necessary. Several hours a day may be spent walking, standing, sitting, and climbing. Moderate to frequent body movements such as reaching, bending, and twisting. Required to grasp objects, pull, push and lift to meet all requirements for EMT certification.

VII Working Conditions:
1. Primarily outdoors, in all seasons and weather conditions, occasionally indoors office settings, classroom. Field work involves walking, climbing, and carrying over uneven terrain. Office work involves use of calculator, copier, fax and telephone, computer and other office equipment.
2. Blood Borne Personal Exposure Risk Category I – Duties involve exposure to blood, body fluids and, to tissues that may contain infectious material. Personnel are required to use the appropriate protective measures, i.e.; eye shields, goggles, gloves, etc. as deemed necessary by procedure. Universal precautions will be adhered to all times.
3. Air Borne Personal Exposure Risk Category I – Daily exposure of health care worker to patients capable of transmitting tuberculosis. An annual PPD is required.
VIII Qualifications:
A Education: High school or GED.
B Certifications:
1. Current Massachusetts EMT Certification
2. Current Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider or, American Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR card.
3. Other certifications or training requirements as required by law, regulation or guidelines of Highland Ambulance EMS, Inc. to include but not limited to:
i Driver Training
ii Bloodborne pathogen education (Annual)
iii Hazardous Material Training. (Recognition and Identification)
iv Regional Paramedic Assistant course
v Regional Epi-pen credentialing
vi Aspirin administration
4. EMS experience / exposure recommended but not required
5. Current MA licensed driver without serious moving violations.
IX Job Knowledge:
1. Thorough knowledge of emergency medicine theory and practice at the BLS level is required. Must have self motivation for learning skills and knowledge and be aware of new developments in the field.
2. Must obtain thorough knowledge of MA Office of Emergency Medical Service statewide protocols and regional treatment policies and procedures.
3. Must obtain thorough knowledge of Highland Ambulance EMS, Inc.’s Standard Operating Procedures and Employee Handbook.
